What Liu Yao (六爻) is
Liu Yao (六爻, “six lines”) is a Chinese way of reading the I Ching. Three coins are thrown six times, and each throw makes one line of a hexagram, from the bottom up. A throw of all heads or all tails makes a moving line, which flips to give a second hexagram.
Each line carries one of the twelve earthly branches. A reader weighs the line that stands for the asker, the world line (世), against the line that stands for the other party, the response line (应), and against the month and day of the question.
How co-fo.ai turns it into a pick
- Once per game, up to 36 hours before kickoff, the server throws three virtual coins six times. The hexagram is stored with the time it was cast and never recast.
- The world line stands for the home team and the response line for the away team.
- Each of the two lines is scored on its branch against the month and day of the game, on the moving lines that feed or attack it, on its own change if it moves, and on whether it overcomes the other line.
- The higher-scoring side is the pick. If the two lines score the same there is no pick. In soccer, a gap of one point or less calls the draw.
- The side is graded twice at one flat stake: on the moneyline, and against the spread where one is posted. A soccer draw call has no spread pick.
Why a divination control?
A reading knows nothing about the teams. That is the point: it shows what a record built with no information looks like, on the same games, at the same odds and graded the same way as the rules engine. A rule is worth something only if it clearly beats it.
